TO BE can be both an auxiliary (in some tenses) and a main verb. It has 2 past forms - WAS (with I, he, she, it) and WERE (with we, you, they).

When they were young they were good friends.
For negative forms, add NOT after TO BE:
There weren't many cars in the street yesterday.
She wasn't at school two days ago.
For questions, change the order of the subject and TO BE:

Were you at home?
